Cannero Castles

This is the evidence of a tormented history of this territory. The disagreement between the families of the Sforza and the Visconti, are the so-called Malpaga Castles, built between the XII and XIV century.

On three islets not far from the coast, from which the Ghibelline family of Mazzarditi used to attack and steal from local populations.

To end these attacks, Duke Filippo Maria Visconti destroyed the castles in 1414.

In the 16th century the Borromeo family built the Vitaliana fortress in their place also in order to protect the lake from Swiss invasions.
